By the end of the second week, my father’s symptoms started to improve but we felt that he should be quarantined for another week since he was not completely healed. My quarantine however was lifted after 2 weeks as I regained my sense of smell and taste, and made sure to clean and sanitize the whole basement before leaving. Going into my dad’s fourth week of quarantine, he started to leave his room and come downstairs, but stayed in his room for the majority of the day to maintain a distance.
For some, this wasn’t their first time fighting a deadly epidemic. In 2018, the state had dealt with an outbreak of Nipah, a brain-damaging virus that, like the coronavirus, had originated in bats and transferred to humans. And, as with covid-19, there was no vaccine and no cure. Seventeen people had died, but the World Health Organization (WHO) called Kerala’s handling of the outbreak a “success story” since—despite technical shortfalls—the state’s health system had contained a potential disaster.
People can still view the untrammeled gardens online, via Keukenhof Virtually Open, until the flowers bloom again next year. The 25 staff gardeners, meanwhile, continue to maintain the park. Mr. de Boer said he expected Dutch flowers to bounce back.“I’m optimistic because people will always need flowers, to connect, to be together, to tell a story,” he said. “I’m optimistic about the flowers, but I’m not optimistic about how to finance the gap. If you can’t make up for the losses, you’re out of the game. So I will do my utmost to survive.“It’s more than money,” he added. “It’s a passion.”
The history of the Gond people dates nearly 1400 years. Paintings as well as other art forms have always been quite popular with tribal people in India, especially the Gond tribe. The Gond people have a belief that viewing a good image begets good luck and they decorate their walls and the floor of their houses with traditional tattoos and motifs. Among the Gond, it is the most prominent among the Pardhan Gonds who are renowned for their artistic skills, be it painting or music. Gond paintings have also been used by the Gond people as a way to record their history.
I met my patient, Mr. C., on my first real “pandemic” shift, when what we were seeing that day was what we had been preparing for. He was classic in his presentation, his X-ray findings, his low oxygen levels… we just knew. And he was the nicest man I had met in a long time. Gasping for breath, he kept asking if we needed anything, and that it would all be okay. He told us he was a teacher but that he was learning so much from us, and how much he respected what we were doing. The opposite could not be more true.
Weaving cultural nuances into the mix, Sushma “strips out anything that reeks of misogyny, patriarchy or otherwise offensive rhetoric, sticking to progressive and inclusive tenets.” Hoping to make her own respected place in a formerly male-dominated profession, she wishes to be rendered completely obsolete in that all pundits become more progressive and inclusive. According to her, “All you need is love in this world, and being a part of someone’s love story is a privilege.” She also mentioned that, “The added bonus for a couple who is LGBTQ is often simply in providing them with the respect and courtesy they might not have received in their search. Statistically, it can take a South Asian person who is gay, up to 7 tries to find a pundit, unless they are unable to find one at all. It may also be difficult for straight South Asians, incase they are having an inter-faith or inter-racial wedding.” And that’s where Sushma comes in! So much so, that in 2018 she officiated a wedding in the hospital while she was in labor herself.
But then, what is alright in the world? Death, pestilence and sudden onsets of distress are what people prayed to gods to save them from. And just look at the world and the unseen hand of…fate? No, the sheer law of averages. Mocking our insurance policies, our diet plans, our gated communities, our medicines, all the instruments we use to secure our lives. And so this ghostly corona of fear already rings us: not the virus itself but the cloud of mental dem—ons it flies in with. It infects all of us to varying degrees—this species of anxiety, this nervousness of the age. It’s like a crash test on the psychological health of a world that has not seen a moment of collective trauma like this in generations. “Everybody has some sort of anxiety,” says P.K. Dalal, president of the Indian Psychiatric Society. “It’s a pandemic none of us have seen before. The last one happened in 1918.”
First, it is necessary to be data-driven and to carefully review the retention and promotion rates of Asian Americans in an analysis of race and gender. Our research suggests that men and women of different races encounter progression barriers at different levels of the management ladder. Our anecdotal experience leads us to believe that it also varies across different parts of the organization
“One pattern we are seeing across the globe is that wherever there was singing and dancing, the virus spread more rapidly,” said Prof Hendrik Streeck, a virologist at the University of Bonn whose team of researchers has spent the last week carrying out the first “Covid-19 case cluster study” in Heinsberg.Coronavirus: the week explained – sign up for our email newsletter Read more“Most infections didn’t take place in supermarkets or restaurants,” Streeck said of his preliminary findings. In Heinsberg, his team of coronavirus detectives could find scant evidence of the virus being transmitted via the surfaces of door handles, smart phones or other objects.
